The Center is seeking proposals from faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences to foster interdisciplinary research and engagement in the Great Plains with a preference for work that includes rural communities. Successful faculty teams will receive the following: $15,000 to be used for summer stipend, travel or research expenses Up to four paid undergraduate research assistants Administrative support Communication and media support Student mentorship, professionalization support and student research space Technical, software and hardware support Advisory and administrative support The purpose of this grant is to encourage faculty to work creatively and collaboratively with scholars outside of their specializations to pursue scholarly or creative work that centers on the Great Plains. While one faculty member must have a tenure home in the College of Arts and Sciences, collaboration with faculty across departments and colleges is encouraged. Proposals are welcome from a range of disciplines exploring any aspect of Great Plains life, including economies, social structures, health outcomes, education, transportation, politics, community identity and memory, demographics and/or the environment, among others.We especially value proposals that engage K-State 105 and address Imperative 3 — provide applied learning experiences for K-State students; Imperative 4 — grow interdisciplinary research; and Imperative 7 — are positive a force for Kansans, in the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan. Chapman Center Interdisciplinary Research Grants are limited to one year and ideally will lead to longer, externally funded initiatives. The Chapman Center for Rural Studies is an award-winning center for public engagement and engaged student research experiences. Proposals for the Interdisciplinary Research Grant should reflect this commitment with a clearly stated pathway for broader impact among rural communities and opportunities for undergraduate research experiences. Preference will be given to projects that engage and collaborate with rural stakeholders and include undergraduate research. Finalists will be asked for a full proposal leading to an interview in January 2025. Award dates for this cycle can begin February 2025-June 2025.
